General Dentistry and Prosthodontics

If you perform your own extractions and implants, we would like to point your attention to some recent developments.

  • The use of socket preservation has become a routine procedure, especially in cosmetic areas.
  • You should always consider if your patient is a candidate for immediate implant placement at the time of extraction
  • There are new relative medical contraindications to extractions and implants: these include the patients on Zometa and Aredia
  • Anticoagulation therapy is no longer routinely discontinued, each case is individually managed

Feel free to discuss this with us.

We would be happy to support your Dental Implant practice

  • Having worked with most dental implant systems during his private practice experience, Dr. Matouk can discuss with you the best restorative option and would even be happy to loan you the prosthetic kit to assist with our mutual patient rehabilitation.
  • With adequate care, even patients that were routinely considered as poor implant candidates can now benefit from our services.  This includes radiotherapy patients, medically compromised patients and those with inadequate bone or soft tissue.
  • We can help you in cases where you feel that the implant is inadequately positioned, whether this is ours or some other specialist’s case.

Recently, dentists are facing a new demand for smile makeover options.

  • This is now more possible with the routine use of immediate loading
  • The maxillofacial surgeon can support your treatment plan by discussing with your patient the interaction between all the different components of a smile makeover
    • Cosmetic Dental Implants with grafting as needed (not just based on surgical limitations)
    • Gingival Plastic surgery with new techniques that provide a large vascularized lasting graft.  Also  options between crown lengthening and LeFort surgery can be realistically discussed for the gummy smile
    • Orthognathic surgery is also useful in cases where a palatal expansion fills the buccal corridors to create a fuller smile
    • Facial plastic surgery where the lipline is no longer a fixed value but can be changed as needed

The management of the edentulous patient is undergoing a scientific revolution.

  • The standard of care for lower denture construction now demands the use of at least 2 dental implants with separate attachments
    • This was scientifically shown to improve self-esteem and even blood  levels of nutritional parameters
  • The atrophic mandible now has many reliable reconstructive options
  • The lost muscular balance of the lips and face, due to resorption, can be re-established by bony and facial muscle procedures such that your patient’s lip support will no longer just depend on a bulky flange.

You can feel confident expanding your practice in new areas.

  • The use of splints for TMJ and sleep apnea is safe as we will be there should your patients need additional care in these areas.
  • The use of new cytologic brush biopsies should never rule out the need for biopsy if you feel that the site is clinically suspicious

Most importantly, you can be sure that we will make every effort to have your patients return with warm thanks for having referred them to such a caring and effective surgical practice.

Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Orthopedics

There are many new advances in Maxillofacial Surgery that can benefit your orthodontic practice.

  • Modern orthognathic surgery now rarely requires wiring the jaws.  In fact, even patients that resist the idea of permanent plates and screws will be happy to learn of the advent of resorbable fixation systems (those are just as efficient as titanium plates but dissolve away within a year)
  • Patients that are worried about the idea of surgery often change their mind once they have the benefit of seeing a digital prediction of their postoperative face.  We will also help educate your patients about the recovery from this surgery and let them discuss with our other patients their experiences such as to allay their fears.
  • Difficult mandibular crowding problems can finally be treated by distraction osteogenesis for mandibular widening.  This is the only procedure that can increase predictably intercanine width
  • Skeletal anchorage (dental implants, palatal implants or lateral ridge attachments) are now becoming more user friendly to allow their incorporation in routine therapy
    • These attachments reduce the role of patient compliance and allow for more predictable dental movement
    • They also reduce the need for the dreaded headgear
  • Difficult exposure and bonding cases can now be managed with reliable adhesives and can be offered gingival recontouring and grafting as needed
  • Minor surgical decortication and fiberotomy procedures are showing promise to increase the speed and stability of your treatment.

  • We can offer sedation and general anesthesia
  • We are trained in managing medically compromised patients
  • We can offer difficult patients the choice of large autogenous bony and soft tissue grafts.  This is especially important in multi-operated cases.

Most importantly, you can be sure that we will make every effort to have your patients return with warm thanks for having referred them to such a caring and effective surgical practice.

Physicians and Medical Specialists

Maxillofacial surgeons are uniquely trained in a field where dentistry and medicine converge.  Being himself a licensed physician and having undergone a long education in the hospital environment, Dr. Matouk will be happy to discuss how Maxillofacial Surgical specialists can support your practice.

  • We offer cosmetic dental implants as well as implants for denture stabilization.
  • We can manage dental clearance prior to cancer therapy
  • We can medically and surgically manage TMJ problems.
  • Being trained in modern minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Matouk can endoscopically manage salivary gland obstruction

Maxillofacial surgeons are trained in sedation and general anesthesia.  We can often offer your patients the choice of  an office procedure with sedation rather than a hospital admission (or just local anesthesia) for minor surgery.

  • Tongue tie and frenulectomy
  • Biopsy of suspicious oral and facial lesions
  • Temporal artery biopsy
  • Minor and Major salivary gland biopsy
  • Lymph node and neck mass biopsy
  • Mohs defect reconstruction

We often help with the surgical management of snoring and sleep apnea, offering not just uvulectomy but also surgical jaw advancement (Orthognathic surgery).  Other options are septorhinoplasty / nasal pyriformplasty and genial advancement with hyoid suspension.

  • Orthognathic surgery is the most successful procedure to date in severe sleep apnea other than tracheotomy.  We will also help educate your patients about the recovery from this surgery (compared to other options such as UPPP and tracheotomy) and let them discuss with our other patients their experiences such as to allay their fears.

Being the primary surgeons performing orthognathic surgery and dental implants, we are an important part of craniofacial teams.

  • This includes not just cleft lip and palate but other syndromes as well such as hemifacial hypoplasia.
  • Even when a cleft lip and/or palate seems already treated, we can assist with ultimate rehabilitation by offering cleft alveolus grafting and dental implant replacement of the missing teeth.

Most importantly, you can be sure that we will make every effort to have your patients return with warm thanks for having referred them to such a caring and effective surgical practice.
